Day 4 - Vancouver to Squamish

Terry Fox Memorial in Vancouver

VANCOUVER TO JACOB’S HOUSE, SQUAMISH

The morning began by leaving Seamus’, heading back over the Cambie Bridge and marveling at the city from above. I am so impressed by the number of cyclists and bike lanes combined. It’s really a fantastic city, I need to spend more time there. I crossed paths with a young cycle tourer named Alex Denes from Minnesota who rode from Montana to Vancouver. Gave him my card. Zipped around Van, took pictures of the Terry Fox monument in front of the BC Lions’ Stadium, then jumped on the #257 bus back to Horseshoe Bay where the ferry dropped me off yesterday. I made my way up to the Sea-to-Sky Highway (Hwy 99) and headed north! Tonight we celebrated my brother’s last day of his 20’s with a trip up the gondola and had dinner and drinks at the top. Tomorrow I head to Pemberton, quite likely in the rain… it had to happen sometime.

Road Report:

Leaving Horseshoe Bay to get to the Sea-to-Sky Highway is a bit of a climb. You can apparently take the #250 bus to get you there, but it was a good warm-up for the legs. The shoulder isn’t bad most of the way to Squamish with a couple of exceptions. Just after Furry Creek there’s a steep climb but I had a nice tailwind to help me up. Immediately after the ‘Squamish’ sign the shoulder all but disappears for a couple of miles and traffic wasn’t as generous as one would hope with providing space.

Distance: 31 miles
Climbing: 2300 ft? (Garmin) 3500 ft? (Strava)
